Church
House
Greenwich, CT
Situated in southwest Connecticut, this project involved the conversion of a derelict 19th-century Baptist church into a contemporary family residence. Our design reflects our clients' vision for a modern, clean aesthetic while honoring the building's historical integrity.
The design centers around what the couple refers to as the “birch pod.” This striking structure serves as the primary bedroom and bath and hovers above the expansive great room where family life unfolds. The great room itself centers on a massive Venetian chandelier and a blend of artworks, acquired during the clients' world travels, that express their eclectic tastes.
The interiors feature a mix of textures and materials, with modern finishes juxtaposed against historical details. We found new uses for old spaces, including the choir loft - now a primary suite - and the rubble foundation - now a wine room - throughout the building.
Our work for the church's envelope - which brought the building's environmental performance up to highest standards - revitalized the original spectacular triple hung windows and spare New England exterior, while providing an unexpected new front door and steeple that give passers-by a hint to the unusual contemporary world inside the old church.
